Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital has conducted a successful endoscopic Transphenoidal re-section i.e. pituitary (Brain) Tumor Surgery through the nose.
The surgery, which was the first of its kind done in the hospital was conducted by a combined Team of medical experts from ENT and Surgery departments.
According to a Consultant Neurosurgeon among the team, Dr Misbahu Haruna said the surgery is an advanced procedure adapted instead of going through the conventional method of opening the head.
He explained that in this method the surgery is done through the nostrils using specialized cameras and instruments to remove the tumor with less complication and greater precision.
Dr. Misbahu further revealed that a scope with a beam of light at its end in inserted into the nostrils down to the base of the brain by the ENT experts and from there the neurosurgeons will take over and do the cranial stage and remove the tumor in a re-sectional way that is bit by bit.
The surgery lasted for about 8 hours and the patient, whom the surgery has performed on spent only 8 days in hospital and was discharged home after he was fully recovered.
